Study Questions for Feb 25, 2024

In Genesis 22:1-8, God tested Abraham's faith by commanding that he sacrifice his son, Isaac. With several opportunities for his faith to collapse, Abraham obeyed even when Isaac recognized there was no sacrifice for the fire.

  1. How do you process thoughts and emotions around these verses?
  2. Why would God use Abraham in a demonstration to sacrifice he beloved son and heir
  3. According to verse 8, what did Abraham expect to happen? What had Abraham learned about God's character and how that affected his faith in God?  Contrast your answer with Genesis 18:14 and Hebrews 11:17-19.
  4. What are the costs that Abraham was willing to pay to obey God?  List some details you see through verse 19.
  5. The Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20 is the overarching command to every follower of Jesus. What costs have you paid or are willing to pay to follow HIs call on your life?
  6. How does the whole life of Abraham, including this story in Genesis 22, ultimately point to the person and work of Jesus?
